As a Chilean, we had had plenty of 8.5+ plus (including 9.0) earthquakes in the past 10-12 years. Even though Earthquakes are extremely dangerous and unsettling, just follow the emergency services in case of such disaster. Pacific coast states/countries have constructions/ buildings made to resist such earthquake magnitude. Just be aware in case of a Tsunami happening after the earthquake, follow the instructions and evacuate quickly. Good luck.

It's not just the earthquake, it's the HUGE tsunami that would come afterwards (especially if Cascadia occurred).

as a Washington resident, I appreciate the video on Cascadia. I hope you can do more videos on Cascadia in the future because I feel it's not talked about enough. I only found out about it because of my interest in seismology. I do feel it could set off a chain reaction, not only San Andreas, but inland faults, two which lie under Seattle and Tacoma, as well as a possible fault under Olympia. then there's the volcanoes lol... I'll just add to this that Glacier Peak is a volcano not talked about enough as well. I've also read somewhere that the Juan de Fuca plate is fracturing or could fracture as it slides under the North American plate, which could cause even more seismicity, but I don't know if this part is actually true.

I've lived in NZ, my whole life . Many are the earthquakes I've been thru have been in excess of 6.5 , up to 8.00 or close enough . Right now there's multiple fault lines within 10 min walk , all of which are active , and when sitting on them , shakes below 1 can be sensed . The only time I've seen & heard animals sound off , & fish sink to the bottom of the aquarium;. Caged birds went crazy , as the area was subject to liquidation - this was before we found out about it in the Christchurch , followed by the Kairoua shakes - for these 3 , the epicenter was over 300 miles south and affected every fault line in the region .

There was a Richter 7.8 quake off Haida GwaIi (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) ten years ago, but didn't produce tsunamis. Another one of 8.1 hit that area in 1949. Would be more worried about the New Madrid fault near St Louis, MO, around 1811-12 three tremors topping 7.8 hit in that time, ringing church bells in Boston. When the strongest (>8) struck, the Mississippi River reversed its flow for a time, but there was nowhere near as many people there then as now. The Yellowstone super-volcano could be a concern too, but having only 3 eruptions spread over more than 2 millions years doesn't mean it's gonna blow very soon.

i grew up in Washington near Seattle and experienced many minor earthquakes, and its not only earthquakes you had to worry about it was dormant rotting glacier loaded volcanoes such as mt rainier. with the risk of massive lahars (mudflows) burying towns, which could be triggered by earthquakes , even if there's no eruptions from those volcanoes, perhaps this cascadia earthquake will trigger volcanic eruptions kind of like mt st helens. i live in new york state now. no matter where you live there are risks of earthquakes even in the mid west such as the new Madrid earthquake.
Месяц назад
Harriet Harlow
I fear and respect the Cascadia and what it can do, which is why I moved east. The 1964 Alaska Good Friday quake and the great Chilean earthquakes can give one a clear idea of what is coming. Also, those on the West Coast in the area of the Cascadia Subduction Zone might want to see if ShakeAlert is online for the area yet. There are two general scenarios for the area: the fault ruptures in a series of 7,5 magnitude quakes, or there is what is known as a full-margin rupture which means the entire zone goes in at least one 8.9 to 9.2+ quakes, all the way from just north of Vancouver Island, BC to Cape Mendocino, CA, a distance of over 700 miles.
Месяц назад
Datokah +60
They forgot to mention that the earthquake could last *four minutes* (due to the length of the fault), causing way more damage than a short-lived '30 second' quake.
Месяц назад
prod.krezen
@Datokah yeah. I’m not very worried about it. I think if it was a bigger concern anyway they would have it balling everywhere bc it’s very very unlikely in the next 50 years and I’m moving to Florida in them years. But yes good talking. Good Samaritan you are sir
15 дней назад
Datokah
@prod.krezen I think you'll be safe where you are. Sure, anything is possible - just take each day as it comes.
15 дней назад
prod.krezen
@Datokah well I did the calculations and according to the scientists I mean we all have to remember this there not always accurate of course and for one this could be way more mild than what they make it seem especially in this video. Anyway according to scientists they say it’s a 37% chance it will happen within the next 50 years. I did the calculations that means it has a 0.0074% chance of it happening each year. Your more likely to die have a regular 7.0 earthquake in your city than that happening. And I understand I’m not even in the area of the where the zone takes place since I’m in a little below the middle of Cali. Im scared of everything tho but yes that’s the chances. So it’s extremely extremely low but ya never know. For all we know we could have a fire start and wipes out my house tomorrow anything’s possible
15 дней назад
Datokah
@prod.krezen Might not happen for a long time, but it will happen eventually. Hopefully it won't be as bad as most scenarios seem to suggest it could be.
15 дней назад
prod.krezen +1
@Datokah I don’t. I’m about 2 hours away from the coast. Now I did discover that cascadia can trigger San Andreas fault to have a earthquake which would damage me but that isn’t a guarantee. Plus I felt better once it said a 10% chance of happening in the next 30 years and a 37% chance of happening in the next 50 years bc imma be outta this state by then. But still never know cascadia could hit tomorrow and everything up North America and part of Canada will be devastated

And the Eastern coast of North America and the Caribbean are in the direct path of a major tsunami as well. Just this one is from the Canary Island of La Palma. Where a large portion of the volcano and the western island is slumping and will landslide into the ocean. Causing billions of tons of rock to crash into the Atlantic, sending massive tsunamis towards us. Only one strong earthquake away from widespread destruction. Similar to the Storegga slide that hit the North Sea and struck Europe. The real fear is that those landslides have occurred multiple times. And one last thing, Hawaii is also doing the same thing which it has done at least 5 times before. So there are several other events just waiting to cause catastrophic tsunamis and they’re all scarily close to happening as well as the cascadia event
Месяц назад
R4M Playteb +1
Good video, but fault rupture dynamics mean SAF hasn't, or ever will, produce an earthquake above M8.3. And strike slip/transform boundaries also can't produce tsunamis, as the ground motion is entirely lateral. The threat from CSZ however is very real, and this video really did well outlining the worst case scenario that may just end up making even a few more people be ready when it's time.

Ok so from all the research I have seen or read in general, Hypothetically yes it could trigger Mt. Helens, which would extend the trembling even further inland. If Yellow Stone were to awaken, North America would be in major problems, maybe not directly from the Earthquake or Lava, but the amount of ash produce would black out the Sun for over a minimum of 6 months which would cause cooling in temperature and damage to crops etc... So yes there are definitely things to plan for, food, water and a few tools will be key.

yeah MIGHT happen. Ill believe it when i feel it. Not like I can do much if / when it happens anyway. Also everything listed in this video is worst case scenario. It could have an earthquake that doesn't hit that high. And also chain reaction earthquakes might not be huge either. Then with Yellowstone, yeah it could erupt, but it doesn't have to have a "super" eruption. Volcanoes can have minor eruptions as well that just let off some steam.

Unfortunately, the Cascadian Subduction zone quake won’t be anything below 8.5 because of the enormous pressure that subduction zone produces. The slightest bit of pressure being let go will start a chain of slips and tremors that will ultimately cause the Juan de fuca plate to fully collapse under itself. There won’t be such small quakes.

Cascadia can possibly take place in 2025 I have been tracking Tsunamis since 2004 after the Tsunami of Bandeh Acheh Indonesia and have noticed a seven year span of Tsunamis since as Japan was hit by a Tsunami in 2011 while Indonesia was hit again in 2018 I was of the opinion that something is devastating to take place in 2025

Good luck.
Месяц назадChristian McBrearty

I was born in Oregon and it wasn’t until the 90s that we learned of the possible disaster. Building standards didn’t take this into account until almost the millennium. We knew about some seismic dangers because of our volcanoes (child of St. Helen’s eruption) but nothing like this.

Месяц назадAmboNec +27

Месяц назадHarriet Harlow
Месяц назадDatokah +60
They forgot to mention that the earthquake could last *four minutes* (due to the length of the fault), causing way more damage than a short-lived '30 second' quake.
Месяц назадprod.krezen
@Datokah yeah. I’m not very worried about it. I think if it was a bigger concern anyway they would have it balling everywhere bc it’s very very unlikely in the next 50 years and I’m moving to Florida in them years. But yes good talking. Good Samaritan you are sir
15 дней назадDatokah
@prod.krezen I think you'll be safe where you are. Sure, anything is possible - just take each day as it comes.
15 дней назадprod.krezen
15 дней назадDatokah
@prod.krezen Might not happen for a long time, but it will happen eventually. Hopefully it won't be as bad as most scenarios seem to suggest it could be.
15 дней назадprod.krezen +1
@Datokah I don’t. I’m about 2 hours away from the coast. Now I did discover that cascadia can trigger San Andreas fault to have a earthquake which would damage me but that isn’t a guarantee. Plus I felt better once it said a 10% chance of happening in the next 30 years and a 37% chance of happening in the next 50 years bc imma be outta this state by then. But still never know cascadia could hit tomorrow and everything up North America and part of Canada will be devastated

This reminded me of an earth quake dream I had way back in 2011. I did not know there might be science to mean my dream possible. It's also likely the New Madrid fault line can let go at any time (last time it let go it altered the land to where the Mississippi river ran backwards for a time). The damage would be much, much greater due to it being near the center of the country.

Месяц назадR4M Playteb +1
Good video, but fault rupture dynamics mean SAF hasn't, or ever will, produce an earthquake above M8.3. And strike slip/transform boundaries also can't produce tsunamis, as the ground motion is entirely lateral. The threat from CSZ however is very real, and this video really did well outlining the worst case scenario that may just end up making even a few more people be ready when it's time.

@Big T i think that the biggest problem in that scenario,Ash would buried whole America, several feet. No one will survive so the cold isnt that much of a problem.
Месяц назадBig T +3
Ok so from all the research I have seen or read in general, Hypothetically yes it could trigger Mt. Helens, which would extend the trembling even further inland. If Yellow Stone were to awaken, North America would be in major problems, maybe not directly from the Earthquake or Lava, but the amount of ash produce would black out the Sun for over a minimum of 6 months which would cause cooling in temperature and damage to crops etc... So yes there are definitely things to plan for, food, water and a few tools will be key.
Месяц назадtmz85 +4

yeah MIGHT happen.
Месяц назадjtry
Unfortunately, the Cascadian Subduction zone quake won’t be anything below 8.5 because of the enormous pressure that subduction zone produces. The slightest bit of pressure being let go will start a chain of slips and tremors that will ultimately cause the Juan de fuca plate to fully collapse under itself. There won’t be such small quakes.

At least it’s not as depressing as some other videos I’ve seen about death and future etc. space stuff. Sounding wise though.

The guy in the video with the underground cold room filled with jars is gonna have a problem if the ground shakes at all. Everything he has would be on the floor.

I thought I was in for a ride because of the thumbnail. Instead I'm being educated on things to do during the earthquake that will make my survival less of what it would be if I just took cover. Thanks
